From beach-side sunsets in SoCal to the knotted grapevines in Napa, California is an iconic travel destination with something to offer every visitor. Outdoor lovers can hike among the redwoods, spend the day surfing, or road trip along California’s iconic coastlines on Highway 101. Those in search of an urban adventure can head to San Francisco, San Diego, and Los Angeles for world-class nightlife, art, and culture. And of course, travelers eager for a taste of West Coast cuisine can easily fill a week (or more) sampling fresh, culturally diverse food or sipping wine at internationally-renowned vineyards.

Overview

When’s the best time to go to California?

California is great to visit any time of year, but spring (March through May) and fall (September and October) are generally the best times to go. Both seasons bring milder temperatures in Southern California and the desert regions, while fall is cool-and-foggy Northern California’s warmest time of year.

Winter brings rain and snow, making it an ideal time to visit areas like Tahoe and Mammoth for peak ski and snowboarding conditions. If you’re in search of sun, stick to southern destinations, like San Diego, Death Valley, or Palm Springs for bright, pleasantly warm (55-70 degrees) days.

Beginning in March, much of the state warms up, giving way to incredible wildflower blooms after the winter rains. This is also when Southern California gets warmer, but hasn’t yet hit unbearably hot temperatures.

June through August, you’ll find hot (90-100 degrees) daytime temperatures in San Diego, L.A., and the desert areas, but cool evenings. Do not expect the same from San Francisco, whose position by the bay makes for foggy, cool weather for much of the summer.

How to get around California

A car will almost always be your best option for traveling within California. You can rent one from any major airport or city for between $30 and $80 per day. Amtrak also runs several train routes throughout the state, which make for a fun, easy alternative to driving up and down the coast, or inland towards Lake Tahoe and Reno, Nevada.

Flights between cities also tend to be quick and inexpensive. For example, a flight from San Francisco to Los Angeles is around 1.5 hours and can cost as little as $100 roundtrip depending on the time of year.

San Francisco is the one part of the state where you can get around without a car through a mix of public transportation, rental bikes, Ubers, and walking.

Food and drink to try in California

Expect to eat and drink well in California. As the “produce basket” of the United States, the state has an abundance of fresh fruits and vegetables (many of which are organic), as well as seafood and locally sourced meat. As you explore, keep an eye out for local specialties, like oysters in Tomales Bay, dungeness crab on the central coast, and avocados everywhere.

Travelers here can also look forward to food from around the world, especially in urban centers like San Diego, San Francisco, and Los Angeles. From Korean-Mexican taco trucks to the best dang dim sum you’ve had outside of China, you’ll find both innovative fusions and classic iterations of international cuisines.

As for drinks, California has robust beer, cocktail, and — yes, of course — wine scenes. In urban centers like L.A. and San Francisco, as well as smaller towns throughout the state, visitors can enjoy world class mixology and cocktails at everywhere from dive bars to high-class establishments.

For wine, Napa might get most of the attention, but California actually has 12 major wine regions, each of which is worth a visit (especially if you want to avoid the Napa crowds). Beer-lovers will enjoy checking out one of California’s more iconic breweries like Russian River, Sierra Nevada, Lagunitas, and Stone Brewery, or venturing to some of its more quirky offerings, like the sours-only brews from The Rare Barrel in Berkeley.

Culture in California

The Californian culture stereotype might be a sea of sun-splashed surfers in SoCal, but thanks to diverse and multicultural communities, vibrant art, film, music, and fashion scenes, and rich histories throughout the state, there are many ways to explore culture in California.

For music, head to iconic theaters like The Greek in Berkeley, California, or one of the many music festivals hosted throughout the state: Coachella, Outside Lands, Hardly Strictly Bluegrass, High Sierra Music Festival, and Bottlerock—just to name a few.

If someone described the Lone Palm bar as something out of Miami Vice, they wouldn’t be entirely wrong—the neon signs, dim lighting, and white tablecloths in an otherwise casual, somewhat dive-y bar give off a certain Vice-esque vibe. Stop by the Lone Palm for a drink at the very beginning or the very end of your night—it fills up quickly. Attentive bartenders and oft-refilled bar snacks like Goldfish also make it a good spot for a post-work Happy Hour. Lone Palm is open every day from 4 pm to 2 am.
Stop by Gravel & Gold in the Mission and you’ll find not only vintage goods from around the world, but also handmade and sustainably produced homeware, specialty food products, books, clothing, and jewelry made in and around San Francisco. Be sure to check out the shop’s made-and-designed-in-house line of clothing and bags, Gravel & Gold Goods; their “Boob Top” is a particular bestseller. If one is going to throw around the word “iconic,” let’s make sure it’s used appropriately. As with Zuni. The awkwardly shaped restaurant—it’s in a narrow storefront with wider spaces on the mezzanine—was opened in 1979 by Billy West. West’s best move was hiring chef Judy Rodgers in 1987. She put in a brick oven—and thus the Zuni roast chicken was born. This dish, more than any other (except perhaps the Caesar salad), defines Zuni. The chicken is roasted in the brick oven and served over a bread salad: greens with chewy bread croutons. Simple, perfectly cooked, and seasonal. Rodgers died in 2013, but the restaurant soldiers on without her. The menu changes with the season and with what the local farms are growing, and will doubtless explain the provenance of your meat. Rodgers, along with her peer across the bay, Alice Waters, pioneered California cooking, and the cooks who have passed through here have gone on to define today’s vibrant restaurant scene.
I’m not sure any other city epitomizes the California dream as well as the surf-centric college town of Santa Cruz. The Dream Inn is the perfect base for exploring and has affordable rooms, a retro-chic design, and a beachfront location within walking distance of the famous boardwalk. The hotel can arrange surf or SUP lessons (you’ll want to rent a wetsuit, even in the summer!). For those who’d rather take in the action from the shore, rent a bike from nearby Pacific Ave Cycles and peddle along West Cliff Drive until you reach the famous surf break, Steamer’s Lane. You’ll be able to watch talented surfers (and ambitious novices) surf some serious waves. A short drive away you’ll find Henry Cowell Redwoods State Park. From the parking lot, take the Meadow Trail to the Loop Trail to Pipeline Road. Follow the road along the river and turn left at the Ridge Fire Road and follow it to the Observation Deck. You’ll be rewarded with spectacular views of the Santa Cruz Mountains. For an even greater reward, grab a seat at the Dream Inn’s new Jack O’ Neill lounge and try one of the great cocktails (the Old Timer is a mix of Knob Creek, lavender sweet tea, and muddled fruit) and if you’re lucky, there might even be a live band.
The bold color palette of this reimagined motel reflects the hues of 14 different desert wildflowers. Nearly every room has a balcony or patio and art installations and photography from local artists can be found throughout the hotel. The young crowd hangs by the pool, which has two hot tubs and a poolside bar. The Saguaro also has two restaurants: El Jefe offers small plates inspired by the street food of Mexico City, while Rocco’s Electric serves Mexican-inspired brunch every day.
If walls could talk, you’d be stuck in conversation with the Fillmore for hours. The building was a dance hall when it opened in 1912 and a roller rink during the 1940s, and led its first concerts in 1952 with artists like James Brown and Ike & Tina Turner. But in the mid-1960s, the venue really had its moment. Concert promoter Bill Graham made the ballroom a hub for psychedelic music and brought would-be legends like the Grateful Dead, Big Brother and the Holding Company, Jefferson Airplane, and Santana to the stage. Needless to say, there’s history here. Learn it best by attending a show. The standing-room-only ballroom still brings in big-name artists—think Lorde and the 1975—at budget-friendly prices, along with a constant stream of smaller acts. There’s a full-service restaurant and a bar, and the vibrant collections of old photos, artwork, newspaper clippings, posters, and billings will school you on the club’s colorful past.
The Mexican food at Guisados is great simply because it doesn’t try too hard. The owners, Armando de la Torre Sr. and Armando de la Torre Jr., aim to make every dish just how mom used to make it, and they succeed on every level. From humble beginnings in Boyle Heights to outposts in Echo Park, Downtown L.A., West Hollywood, Burbank, and a Koreatown location on the second floor of the Platform 35 food hall. Guisados has flourished thanks to handmade tortillas anchored by braised chicken breast, flank steak, or pork. The mole poblano taco is especially mouthwatering, and the quesadilla con chorizo is big enough to share—though you probably will want to keep it all to yourself.
J. Paul Getty’s original museum is as much about the transporting setting as it is about the pieces inside. When the billionaire oil tycoon decided to open a museum for his extensive collection of antiquities in 1974, he modeled it after an ancient Roman villa that had been buried by the eruption of Mount Vesuvius. The estate’s painted ceilings, Roman columns, and marble floors feel at one with the 44,000-strong collection of Etruscan, Greek, and Roman pieces (don’t miss the bronze statue of Herakles, circa 300 B.C.E.). When you stand amid the 64-acre ground’s bronze statues, frescoes, and reflecting pool, the expansive view of the Pacific Ocean offers one of the few clues that you’re in California. A regular stream of theater performances, readings, and academic talks in the open-air amphitheater keeps things heady day and night. Pro tip: Although it’s free, entrance to the Getty Villa requires an advance, timed-entry ticket, bookable online. Don’t miss the 40-minute tours on Thursdays and Saturdays of the four Roman gardens, which cover a fascinating array of mythology and history.
Stop at Scribe Winery and pick up a bottle of their newly released rosé to pair with oysters at Hog Island in Marshall, CA. Picnic tables overlook Tomales Bay and must be reserved in advance. Throw the oysters on the grill or eat them raw and don’t hesitate to ask the staff to share shucking tips. This appeared in the May 2014 issue.
Husband-and-wife team Genevieve Gergis and Ori Menashe are behind Bestia, an Italian haven that consistently ranks high on local “best of” lists. The decor follows the name—which translates to “beast” in Italian—with its wall of weapons and meat-hook chandeliers. There’s no wrong choice on this menu, but the roasted marrow bone and alla ‘nduja pizza are favorites for first-timers. Without a reservation, expect to wait at least an hour, even on a weeknight. If you’re looking to dine in a big group or want a primo time slot (7 p.m. on a Saturday night, say), then you’ll need to plan ahead and make a reservation at least a month in advance.
