At first, the concept of Tribute Pizza in San Diego’s North Park neighborhood might sound a little gimmicky. Each pie on the menu is a “tribute” to other famous pizzas around the world like the Margherita, inspired by a pizza originally created in 1889 in honor of Queen Margherita (it’s still served at Pizzeria Brandi in Naples, Italy) and the spicy and sweet Sopressata, a tribute to a pizza served at Paulie Gee’s in Greenpoint, New York. Tribute was opened by Matthew Lyons, the former general manager of the MIHO food truck and he started his pizza endeavor as a pop-up concept. The permanent space in the former North Park Post Office is flooded with light thanks to floor-to-ceiling windows on three sides and the bright blue ceramic tiled pizza oven is a focal point in the restaurant.
