A waterfront icon in the spirit of Sydney’s Opera House, the South Boston home of the Institute of Contemporary Art showcases the work of artists like Shepard Fairey, Tara Donovan, and Nan Goldin wrapped in glass and steel and bathed in copious natural light. With gallery and performance spaces boldly thrust above the Seaport District waterfront, the ICA also presents an ongoing calendar of dance, theater, film, and live music; come on Thursday night and admission and guided tours are free. You can drink in the views along with a Harpoon draft or a glass of chardonnay at the Water Cafe—it’s in the lobby, so you don’t need to pay for entrance to the museum to visit.

Modern Glass, Angles and Art
The ICA stands at attention over Boston Harbor. All glass and modern angles, it is architecturally unique in the city’s overwhelmingly brick landscape. Looking out over the water from the cantilevered passageway gives you a magnificent view. The art is current, often interactive and at times will leave you scratching your head, but it will always spark a conversation. The bleachers forming the public space outside are a spot for quiet repose and wonderful concerts in the summer. Wolfgang Puck’s Water Cafe is the attached watering hole, and the hip gift store is filled with arty items you never knew you couldn’t live without! In addition there are special events on the first Friday of every month.
Modern Art on the Waterfront
Designed by celebrated architects Diller Scofidio + Renfro, Boston’s ICA is located in the emerging South Boston Waterfront, also known as the innovation district. Housing a collection of contemporary art, the museum embraces the harbor with a cantilevered facade and outdoor plaza. On First Fridays (held on the first Friday of each month) the museum has guest DJs, live performances, gallery talks and specialty drinks while the Water Café serves a small plate menu with cocktails inspired by the museum’s current exhibitions.
