Visitors love the Space Needle, Pike Place Market, and the Seattle Underground Tour. But travelers will be rewarded by getting to know the city’s lauded restaurants, local distilleries and breweries, and museums with themes ranging from art to aviation. On rainy days, relax in a quirky café, enjoy some neighborhood boutique shopping, or browse at an independent bookstore on Capitol Hill. Want to get out of the city? Take a day trip to Bainbridge Island, Tacoma, Leavenworth, or Mount Rainier.

When’s the best time to go to Seattle?

Seattle gets a bad rap for its rainy climate, but the truth is, all-day downpours are pretty rare. Summer often doesn’t get started until mid-June, but the warm weather lasts through September and into October. Summer temperatures average in the mid to high 70s; in winter, they hover in the 30s and 40s; and in spring, in the 60s. Still, whenever you visit, it’s a good idea to bring an umbrella and a light waterproof coat.

How to get around Seattle

Seattle’s closest airport is Sea-Tac International Airport, located about 30 minutes south of downtown. If you’re coming here by train, you’ll arrive at the King Street Station downtown.

Each of Seattle’s neighborhoods has a distinct local flavor. You’ll find lots of nightlife in Belltown, just north of downtown, where young professionals go to eat, drink, and dance. Capitol Hill is the gay-friendly hipster scene. Fremont has a funky, hippie attitude, with eclectic shops and landmarks like the Fremont Troll. Ballard has a strong Scandinavian history, but today it’s mainly cute boutiques and restaurants. Public transit is extensive and mostly reliable, with options including the bus, light rail, and streetcars. Parking can be difficult downtown or in the smaller neighborhoods with narrow streets, and many areas have metered street parking until 8 p.m. Seattle is a fairly geographically compact city, so taxis are an affordable option, as are pay-as-you-go bike share options.

Can’t miss things to do in Seattle

Hit the water! On sunny days, a ferry ride, water taxi, or Puget Sound cruise gives you a quick and fun view of Seattle that you won’t get anywhere else. Kayak in the arboretum, paddleboard on Lake Washington, or rent a sailboat. At the very least, stroll down to the waterfront and enjoy the view from a pier.

Food and drink to try in Seattle

With everything from fine dining to pub grub, Seattle is a foodie destination. We’re known for our seafood, particularly salmon and Penn Cove mussels (not to mention the oversize, suggestively shaped geoduck, pronounced gooey-duck). Seattle is a coffee lover’s paradise, with many independent coffeehouses and local roasters. Washington apples are a point of pride, so if you’re at a farmers’ market, sample some of our local varieties, like the coveted Honeycrisp. Seattle excels in Thai, Indian, and Vietnamese cuisine—pho is a local favorite—and has some great Central and South American restaurants in the outer neighborhoods. The food-truck scene is alive and well in Seattle, offering everything from tortas to soul food to Korean sliders.

Culture in Seattle

Although Seattle may be best known musically for the 1990s grunge scene, its arts and culture scene is diverse. The Seattle Symphony plays at Benaroya Hall downtown, and the Seattle Center hosts the Seattle Opera and the Pacific Northwest Ballet (both at the Marion Oliver McCaw Hall). Theater lovers will enjoy the 5th Avenue Theatre, the Paramount, and the Seattle Repertory Theatre. Popular live music venues include the Crocodile, Neumos, the Showbox, and the Neptune.

In January, the Lunar New Year festival becomes a street party in the International District. February offers the Northwest Flower and Garden Show and the Seattle Boat Show. In March, there’s Emerald City ComiCon and Moisture Festival (a burlesque comedy festival). In May, you can check out Folklife, the folk music festival; Sasquatch Music Festival over Memorial Day Weekend; and the Seattle International Film Festival. June brings PrideFest and the Seattle Rock ’n’ Roll Marathon. In July, there’s the food frenzy Bite of Seattle, the Japanese festival Bon Odori honoring the dead, the Seattle Beerfest, the Capitol Hill Block Party music festival, and the Seafair Torchlight Parade, featuring the Seafair Pirates. August has Hempfest, plus PAX (Penny Arcade Expo) for geeks. In September, there’s the huge Bumbershoot music festival at Seattle Center, and the Washington State Fair. October offers the Seattle Lesbian and Gay Film Festival. And in December, the two-day crafts fair Urban Craft Uprising caters to the Etsy crowd.

Don’t be intimidated by our legendary rain! Even in fall and winter, Seattle’s precipitation is usually more like a “mizzle” (mist + drizzle). A gloomy forecast should never keep you from heading out to explore: Just keep your raincoat and umbrella at the ready.

This lovely contemporary-American eatery anchors the Ballard Public lofts. Chef Shaun McCrain shows off his time spent in the kitchen at New York City’s Per Se with reimagined classics like foie gras layered into a terrine with apple, black sesame, and a gelée of dashi (a Japanese broth). Even the cocktails are innovative—ask for the restaurant’s fresh take on a Pimm’s No. 1 cup. Reserve ahead for a leisurely dinner, or just belly up to the bar. And if you don’t have time for that nonsense, no worries! You can order a takeaway case with goodies like truffled deviled eggs, white bean spread, and lemon-thyme flatbread.
Seattle’s most iconic restaurant has earned its laurels, reinterpreting Pacific Northwest classics like bonito with chrysanthemum and sea bean caper, and ricotta dumplings with mustard, rapini, and stinging nettles. in 2015, a young hotshot took the helm: Brady Williams, formerly from the two-Michelin-star Blanca in Brooklyn, New York. He ditched his goal of playing professional hockey to cook—and, boy, has it paid off! Among other distinctions, he was anointed a finalist for Rising Star Chef of 2017 by the James Beard Foundation (the year it won “Best Wine Program”). Reserve ahead and break out the grown-up clothes to check out his masterpieces, served high on Queen Anne hill overlooking the seaplanes and sailboats gliding on Lake Union.
The first Taiwanese restaurant to earn a fancy-pants Michelin star, this steamed dumpling and noodle chain gets rave reviews from Seattleites and reviewers alike. Long a staple of nearby Bellevue, Din Tai Fung has finally crossed Lake Washington to establish a Seattle outpost and and added a second option at Pacific Place shopping center (600 Pine Street). Go for the scrumptious, pillowy xiao long bao (Chinese soup dumplings), of course, but don’t neglect the rest of the menu. Standouts include sweet taro buns, vinegar-laced wood ear mushrooms, and sautéed mustard greens with shredded ginger, along with the red bean sticky rice wraps for dessert.
Bookstore Bar & Café combines two of life’s great pleasures: books and booze. This hotel bar focuses on scotch and whiskey (over 130 varieties), though they also serve up carefully made craft cocktails; we liked the the Rum Daisy (light rum, lemon, house-made grenadine). At happy hour, you can nibble on small plates with charcuterie, cheese, or fried padron peppers, too. And if you see a book you like, they’re all for sale.
Inside Spinasse’s charmingly rustic dining room, you’ll feel like you’ve left Seattle for an Italian trattoria. The roasted beet salad with cherries, radishes and marinated La Tur cheese is tangy and refreshing, while the hand-cut egg pastas are buttery and rich. No matter where you sit, you’ll have an excellent view of the open kitchen; step around to the side to see the pastaio making fresh pasta. For the full foodie experience, try the degustation menu, a family-style tasting of every antipasto, primo, and secondo on the menu.
It sounds like a Portlandia sketch: the Northwest pizza joint with an on-site chicken coop, where you can get any pie topped with a soft-cooked egg. But Humble Pie is quite serious about their pizza (and their chickens); their goal is balancing Asian and Pacific Northwest architectural elements with sustainable urban farming. That means sunny wooden picnic benches right next to the outdoor coop, and sharing a table with new friends during their busy happy hour. The menu is heavy on local and organic ingredients, including the beer and cider selection. Our favorite was the pulled pork, pickled onion, and Beecher’s mozzarella cheese pizza — with an egg on top, of course.
It may not be the smallest U.S. national park (that honor goes to Pennsylvania’s Thaddeus Kosciuszko National Memorial, at 0.02 acres), but the Seattle unit of the Klondike Gold Rush National Historical Park is a small hidden gem in Pioneer Square. Interactive exhibits allow visitors of all ages to follow actual gold-rush stampeders on their cross-country adventure through journals, personal papers, and artifacts. Step into a miner’s cabin or hop on a scale to calculate your actual worth in gold. Learn about the entrepreneurs, like John Nordstrom or George Bartell, who came to the area to make their fortunes outfitting gold prospectors (and whose businesses survive today). This fascinating free museum is kid-friendly and a welcome rest stop for downtown visitors.
No surprises – pork is the focus at West Seattle’s Swinery deli. When you walk into the tiny shop, you’ll see a huge deli case full of steaks and chops, bacon, smoked meats, sausages, pates and confits, as well as all the pickled veggies, slaws, sauces, and sliced deli meats you need to assemble a truly kickass charcuterie platter. If you can’t wait, order a sandwich in the adjacent Courtyard Cafe. The focus is on BBQ pork and burgers, but the smoked turkey sandwich is smoky and flavorful, and the red onions and Carolina sauce add some tangy brightness. For big appetites, try the “Danger Fries,” hand-cut and fried in rendered pork fat, tossed with salt, fresh garlic and chives, and smothered in a bacon blue béchamel sauce.
Located in a historic Art Deco building inside Volunteer Park, the Asian Art Museum contains a permanent collection of jades and ceramics, sculpture, textiles, and Chinese painting and calligraphy, as well as temporary exhibitions featuring everything from illuminated Persian manuscripts to modern Japanese anime. The Gardner Center offers public programs such as talks, author events, and artistic performances to introduce visitors to new cultural perspectives.
