North of the harbor on Lavender Bay, Clark Park is an ideal spot for a picnic away from the bustle. On the western end, curious visitors discover the garden Wendy Whiteley created from a landfill. 5- to 10-minute walk from Luna Park. This appeared in the August/September 2013 issue.
Wendy Whiteley's secret garden is an unexpected treat tucked away just behind Luna Park near Lavender Bay in Sydney.
The enchanting garden is not your run-of-the-mill city park. It has a certain magic that took passion and love to create. The land was once a dumping ground of the NSW railways and an unsightly wasteland. But in 1992 Wendy's husband, famous Australian artist Brett Whitely, died, and Wendy turned her grief and passion into creating a living artwork—the "Secret Garden." The park drips with blossoms and ferns that fall across winding pathways leading to intimate picnic spots that overlook Sydney's magnificent harbor.
