Overview

When’s the best time to go to California?

California is great to visit any time of year, but spring (March through May) and fall (September and October) are generally the best times to go. Both seasons bring milder temperatures in Southern California and the desert regions, while fall is cool-and-foggy Northern California’s warmest time of year.

Winter brings rain and snow, making it an ideal time to visit areas like Tahoe and Mammoth for peak ski and snowboarding conditions. If you’re in search of sun, stick to southern destinations, like San Diego, Death Valley, or Palm Springs for bright, pleasantly warm (55-70 degrees) days.

Beginning in March, much of the state warms up, giving way to incredible wildflower blooms after the winter rains. This is also when Southern California gets warmer, but hasn’t yet hit unbearably hot temperatures.

June through August, you’ll find hot (90-100 degrees) daytime temperatures in San Diego, L.A., and the desert areas, but cool evenings. Do not expect the same from San Francisco, whose position by the bay makes for foggy, cool weather for much of the summer.

How to get around California

A car will almost always be your best option for traveling within California. You can rent one from any major airport or city for between $30 and $80 per day. Amtrak also runs several train routes throughout the state, which make for a fun, easy alternative to driving up and down the coast, or inland towards Lake Tahoe and Reno, Nevada.

Flights between cities also tend to be quick and inexpensive. For example, a flight from San Francisco to Los Angeles is around 1.5 hours and can cost as little as $100 roundtrip depending on the time of year.

San Francisco is the one part of the state where you can get around without a car through a mix of public transportation, rental bikes, Ubers, and walking.

As the “produce basket” of the United States, the state has an abundance of fresh fruits and vegetables (many of which are organic), as well as seafood and locally sourced meat. As you explore, keep an eye out for local specialties, like oysters in Tomales Bay, dungeness crab on the central coast, and avocados everywhere.

Travelers here can also look forward to food from around the world, especially in urban centers like San Diego, San Francisco, and Los Angeles. From Korean-Mexican taco trucks to the best dang dim sum you’ve had outside of China, you’ll find both innovative fusions and classic iterations of international cuisines.

As for drinks, California has robust beer, cocktail, and — yes, of course — wine scenes. In urban centers like L.A. and San Francisco, as well as smaller towns throughout the state, visitors can enjoy world class mixology and cocktails at everywhere from dive bars to high-class establishments.

For wine, Napa might get most of the attention, but California actually has 12 major wine regions, each of which is worth a visit (especially if you want to avoid the Napa crowds). Beer-lovers will enjoy checking out one of California’s more iconic breweries like Russian River, Sierra Nevada, Lagunitas, and Stone Brewery, or venturing to some of its more quirky offerings, like the sours-only brews from The Rare Barrel in Berkeley.

Culture in California

The Californian culture stereotype might be a sea of sun-splashed surfers in SoCal, but thanks to diverse and multicultural communities, vibrant art, film, music, and fashion scenes, and rich histories throughout the state, there are many ways to explore culture in California.

Today, Bart’s is the largest independently owned and operated outdoor bookstore in the country—and the books outside are still for sale via the honor system. But the offerings extend indoors too. If you’re looking for cookbooks and culinary lore, check in the building’s kitchen. The living room features poetry. Art books are in the gallery. The rest of the place is a maze of bookshelves with corrugated tin roofing and open-air seating areas for reading at your leisure. Don’t worry about rain: The books are fairly well protected, and while a few may be lost in the rare heavy storm, most make it through perfectly fine.
Walk through the foyer of Ojai’s Beacon Coffee and into this light and airy crafter’s paradise. When you emerge, you may have a new project or two in your hands. Beautifully curated by husband-wife team Kirk and Anna Nozaki (who have a background in fashion and graphic design, respectively) Cattywampus Crafts is filled with all-natural products that seem made for an Instagram or Pinterest feed. This elegantly rustic 10,000-acre ranch tucked into the Santa Ynez Valley encourages you to get unplugged and get outdoors. In fact, there are no TVs or phones in the guest rooms. Each of the 19 spacious rooms and suites is slightly different. Grand Garden rooms have cozy gas fireplaces and views of Los Olivos, while suites with living rooms are expansive enough to spread out and relax. At the Bear and Star restaurant, ingredients for the “refined ranch cuisine” are sourced from the Fess Parker Home Ranch, just seven miles from the inn. Wagyu specialties abound—from carpaccio to burgers, meatloaf to steaks—while the Fess Parker Winery supplies the restaurant with estate-grown rhône varietals. Lounge by the pool, or drop in at the spa for a massage or facial (a highlight: the Heaven on Earth package, which blends the Unwind massage with a customized Elemis facial). Spread across 220 acres of coastal valley, the Ojai Valley Inn opened in 1923, originally commissioned by an early 20th-century glass tycoon. With white stucco and terra-cotta buildings, the mission-style retreat looks like a dreamy California village wedged between the Pacific Ocean and the Topatopa Mountains. Luxurious spa penthouses are ultra-private, and their location in the Spa Ojai building gives guests an easy route to their warm Himalayan salt stone massage or sound energy therapy treatment. Since 1983, food lovers in the know have headed to Santa Barbara’s renowned Paradise Café. Housed in an early 20th-century brick and stucco building with a relaxed atmosphere, the café’s oak wood grill is fueled by Santa Maria live oak—also known as California live oak—a wood that’s essential for the area’s regional style of barbecue. The flavors brought out by the oak in steaks, pork chops, roast chicken, shrimp and sausage, ahi tuna, rainbow trout, and salmon keep added seasonings to a minimum, so fresh ingredients remain the focus of the menu. The crowd favorite, the half-pound signature Paradise Burger, is grilled over oak, topped with Tillamook cheddar cheese, and placed on an onion roll—and best enjoyed with a glass of Paradise syrah, sourced from local vineyards. If you sit on the patio, give the historic mural more than a glance. It features Leo Carrillo, an old-Hollywood actor best known for his role as Pancho in the television series The Cisco Kid; he is locally beloved for his involvement in preserving and conserving California open spaces.
This travel-inspired eatery got so popular that it moved to a larger space on University Avenue in August 2017. Once in the new location, executive pastry chef Kristianna Zabala was able to expand her menu (which changes daily) to include breakfast sandwiches and Montreal-style bagels alongside her usual blood-orange-Creamsicle and blueberry-lavender doughnuts. Available in a range of creative flavors, Zabala’s signature creations feature organic eggs and fresh ingredients from local farmers. Don’t leave without trying the classic ube-taro-coconut variety or the white-chocolate-mint-glazed doughnut with a passion-fruit-jalapeño drizzle, if they are available.
In 2016, one of San Diego’s most seasoned restaurant managers decided to open his first solo project, bringing Campfire to Carlsbad. The eatery is dedicated to the art of live-fire cooking and draws inspiration from famed Argentine chef Francis Mallmann. In the kitchen, executive chef Andrew Bachelier uses a custom 12-foot hearth, powered by a Grillworks grill named Grace, to cook dishes like manila clams with smoked pork belly, and brisket with cornbread purée. Located in a former auto repair shop, the restaurant features quirky design elements like a Quonset-style corrugated-metal arch sourced from nearby Camp Pendleton and dating back to World War II.
