Find a Music Legend at the Continental Club

"Everyone from the late blues musician Stevie Ray Vaughan to the Butthole Surfers has played at the Continental Club. Musicians who do big gigs in Austin like to play small shows here afterward," says Liz Lambert.

Continental Classy

This live music venue, in the self-proclaimed capital of exactly that, is a great way to finish an evening in the South Congress area of Austin. I recommend staying across the street at the modern, cozy and cool Hotel San Jose so that you can start your mornings off at Jo's. 'I love you so much.' After a day of running the trails of Lady Bird Lake and hitting the store fronts all along Congress, you'll have worked up an appetite for the gourmet burgers at Hopdoddy, just one block from your hotel. Then it's time to walk across the street to hear some tunes at the Continental Club. Founded in 1957 and still packing them in. Still hungry after your show at the Club? Just exit your venue and turn right to find the, ever hilarious and truly local ice cream winner, Amy's. Bovine, so fine, indeed.

Boyhood and Bowling

Boyhood, Richard Linklater's multiple Academy Award-nominated film, is a love letter to the director's own Texas boyhood, and was filmed largely in and around Austin, which stands in for various places around the state. The bowling alley where the family hangs out is supposed to be in Houston, but is actually the Dartbowl, in Austin. Another location in Austin that's easily identifiable is the Continental Club (seen here), the granddaddy of Austin music venues whose owner is a friend of Linklater's—and which also starred in Linklater's breakthrough 1989 film, Slacker.
