D&Department is a youthful pop-up shop emphasizing designer homewares, kitchen goods, and small batch foods and housed in the 11th century Bukkoji Temple in the center of Kyoto. The store’s concept was created by Kenmei Nagaoka, a professor at Kyoto University of Art and Design and his students. They exclusively sell long lasting products like sturdy tea mugs, clear glass tokkuri (Japanese sake sets), and the occasional oversea product, like durable Freitag bags from Switzerland made from recycled truck tarps. They also highlight specialty, small batch food producers with whom they’ve met in person resulting in a special range of sesame seed oils, additive free pickles, and heirloom misos and soys.
