Livraria Lello & Irmão

Livraria Lello & Irmão is a bookstore in central Porto, just up the road from the Clérigos Church. This Art Nouveau bookstore is beautiful and worth a visit. JK Rowling, author of the Harry Potter series, also frequented the bookstore when she taught English in Porto and is reported to be an inspiration for her writing. It costs 3 euro to get in, money you get back if you buy a book.

Livraria Lello Book Store

A well known architectural jewel in Porto is Livraria Lello, a bookstore well-known for its red stairways that look like a giant tongue. This beautiful bookstores, which was opened in 1906, was chosen one of the ten most beautiful bookstores in the world. The store was designed by Xavier Esteves and it is the flagship store for one of the most important Portuguese publishing houses. Co-owner Antero Braga is usually around, knows the Portuguese book market in and out, and will be glad to help you find exactly what you want even when you don’t have a clue about what that may be. Photography inside the store is not allowed but if you flash your Journalist card again and show up just before the store is opened, than taking pictures might be an option. Livraria Lello & Irmão

Lello, one of the most beautiful bookstores in the world, merits a visit for its architectural features alone: a neo-Gothic facade, stained-glass skylights and a magnificent double staircase. The 1906 shop sells Portuguese titles, as well as English- and French-language books.
