Labrador Nature Reserve, a Hidden Gem
Hidden away at the end of small road off of Telok Blangah Road at the southern tip of Singapore, Labrador Nature Reserve, also known as the Labrador Battery or Labrador Park, is a quiet hillock where the remains of Fort Pasir Panjang can be found. It was one of about a dozen coastal artillery forts built by the British in the 19th century to defend the western passageway into Keppel Harbour. A trip is worthwhile for many reasons. Military buffs will enjoy seeing the old gun placements, supply tunnels and pillboxes of the former fort, while others will get a kick out of seeing cruise ships and giant yachts coming within a few meters of the seawall as they squeeze through the narrow passage into Keppel Harbour. There are nature trails and lookouts throughout the 54-acre hillside park, and also playground and exercise equipment, and a jetty. At the top of the park is Tamarind Hill, a Thai restaurant located in a lovely restored black and white colonial bungalow.
