The man behind this simple but popular café, which is located close to the Tjörnin Lake, is Þórir Bergsson—an experienced chef with a commitment to local and seasonal cuisine. His focus is on food that's both hearty and healthy—what he calls "honest food"— and spans chia-porridge, oatmeal muesli, and smoothies at breakfast, and then homemade breads and cakes, as well as hearty soups, oven-baked tandooris, Vietnamese pancakes ,and lasagnes for lunch and dinner. Daily lunch and brunch deals and occasional two-for-one offers keep the colorful interior busy. There are always vegan and vegetarian dishes available, and the coffee and service are both great, too. (A second location, Bergsson RE, down at the harbour, serves fish and seafood dishes.)

Is there anything better than a bakery restaurant? Bergsson Mathus is the kind of place where locals go for brunch on the weekends, or for a special loaf of bread. Bright and open, it feels light even on a snowy winter day. You can always get a breakfast of fresh sourdough, cheese, egg, and prosciutto, or yogurt and muesli. The lunch and dinner specials change regularly, but are always fresh, interesting, and made using as little waste as possible.
