In 1978, when the United Nations Scientific, Educational, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) began designating World Heritage Sites, there were 13 places on the list. Because of their rich look into the acheivements of humanity, these historical sites now belonged to the world as places to visit, marvel, and learn. In the nearly 40 years since that first list was established, 1,073 places in total have been given the UNESCO seal of approval.
