Mandarin Oriental, Taipei
Opened in May 2014 with a facade mildly reminiscent of a 19th-century European grand hotel, the Mandarin Oriental Taipei might seem incongruous in an Asian city—at least to those unacquainted with the Taiwanese penchant for blending international styles with more typically Asian motifs. The hotel’s Old World luxury extends throughout, from the marble-floored lobby (complete with white columns holding up high cathedral ceilings) to the rooms themselves, which are coolly stunning. Each room, from the standard Deluxe to the sprawling Presidential Suite, has separate tubs and walk-in showers inside a marble bathroom designed to make anyone feel like royalty. As for sleeping arrangements, “plush” is an overused word in hotel reviews, but it’s hard to find a better one to describe the feeling of sinking into a bed with 480-thread-count satin linen (which rises to 1,000 in certain suites) and a goose-down duvet. As a finishing touch, look up: Every room basks in the glow of its own chandelier. Though Marie Antoinette and the Empress Dowager Cixi lived on different continents, both would feel quite at home at the Mandarin Oriental.

Neighborhood Vibe
The area surrounding the northern end of wide, tree-lined Dunhua road has a slightly European vibe to it, with a good mix of high-rise residences, boutiques, and fine restaurants. Though Songshan airport (which has flights both domestic and to a few cities on the Chinese mainland) is just a kilometer north, aircraft noise in Taipei tends to get lost in the city’s general aural ambience. A few blocks south sits Taipei Stadium, which hosts both sporting events and big-name international musical acts, and a few blocks past that lie the shopping malls of Chunghsiao Road.
Need to Know
Rooms: 256 rooms, 47 suites. From $540.

Dining options: Dining opportunities are as regal as one might expect in a hotel of this caliber. Highlights include the third-floor Ya Ge, which offers excellent Cantonese cuisine, including seasonal dishes designed for health and wellness according to Chinese medicinal principles. Overseen by Michelin-starred chef Mario Cittadini, Bencotto serves exquisite Italian cuisine in a luxurious atmosphere made relaxed through a subdued lighting scheme and seemingly endless wine selection. Adjacent to the lobby, the elegant sky-blue and silver Jade Lounge offers all-day dining and traditional afternoon high tea featuring pastries and a wide selection of Asian and European teas.
Spa and gym details: Spread over two floors, the Spa at Mandarin Oriental Taipei is considered among the most luxurious in Taipei. It offers massage, a beauty salon, and a special hydrotherapy section including crystal steam showers, a sauna, and an invigorating ice fountain. There is also a gym fully equipped with state-of-the-art exercise equipment, a yoga studio, and a temperature-controlled 20-meter outdoor pool.
Insider Tips
Who’s it for: Travelers looking to experience a taste of old European grandiosity in the heart of one of Asia’s most modern cities.
Our favorite rooms: It’s a tough call in a hotel that exudes luxury top to bottom, but with its chic layout, gorgeous furnishings (including the antique divanset by the high alcove window), the Mandarin Room is as close to royal lodgings as most people ever need to get.
Landmark oddball: Need a break from classical architecture? About a kilometer to the southeast of the Mandarin Oriental Taipei sits one of East Asia’s architectural oddities. Is it a 12-story golf ball? Is it a shopping mall? It’s Core Pacific City, and actually, it’s both. Though neither the biggest nor the liveliest shopping center in Taipei, few would argue that this Deathstar-shaped complex isn’t completely unique—perhaps a bit too unique.
