'The light between the ricks of hay and straw Was a hole in Heaven’s gable...'
The drumlin (small green hills) of County Monaghan inspired Irish poet Patrick Kavanagh (1904 -1967) when he grew up on a small farm there. On the Patrick Kavanagh Trail, you can explore the places around the village of Inniskeen that inspired his work and featured in his life. These include the farm at Rocksavage where he wrote the above lines in A Christmas Childhood. Start at the Patrick Kavanagh Resource Centre to read his poems, visit his grave nearby, get a guided tour and pick up a trail guide before setting off on the narrow roads and discovering farms, lakes, forests, pretty crossroads and farm shops for fresh produce along the way.
