Salt & Straw

2035 NE Alberta St, Portland, OR 97211, USA

I was on a cruise in Italy when I heard about this place. I’d mentioned that I was heading to Portland, and a fellow cruiser, a native of the town, had told me that if they had one recommendation it would be the ice cream at Salt and Straw.

What she didn’t tell me was that the flavors are not your usual vanilla, chocolate, and raspberry ripple. In fact, the first thing I tasted at Salt and Straw was their new “Bollywood” recipe, which included carrot custard and cardamom, which sounds almost sensible when you considered that some of their most popular flavors include prosciutto and goat cheese.

There was a huge line, even on a Friday mid-afternoon, but it was worth it for the almond brittle with salted ganache, not to mention the apple pie with real chunks of cheddar cheese. They’re doing their best to “Keep Portland Weird” here...and it tastes good.

Salt and Straw

If the line out the door at Salt and Straw doesn’t tell you how great of an ice cream shop this is, maybe the line out the door and wrapped around the building will. With flavors like chocolate with blueberries and rice krispy treats to olive oil, this place really gets creative. Oh, and they will let you try as many as you like!

Salt & Straw

When most people think of ice cream what comes to mind? Maybe chocolate or vanilla but every now and then people get real crazy with rocky road. Salt & straw pushes creativity to the max with their ice cream. Their flavors are unheard of, their atmosphere is very welcoming and the employees are always so friendly. The ice cream is great and so is the customer service. All at a great price. Highly recommend going to Salt & Straw for a date or just getting some ice cream.

Devour Artisanal ice cream at Portland's Own Salt & Straw

May I suggest that you try the Stumptown Coffee and Burnside Bourbon flavor if you like coffee or the sea salt caramel ribbons, if you’re looking for something basic, but get the chocolate gooey brownie if you like chunks. There is so much more to love about Salt & Straw than it’s cult following and mouthwatering flavors (there are many, many more). The branding and cute take away tubs are excellent. The staff is ridiculously friendly accommodating and patient. Plus, the companies “farm to cone” concept is on point. Don’t even get me started on the smell of the handmade waffle cones!
