Split your time between soaking up this vast city's history and exploring its vibrant contemporary side. Travelers will find most of the major monuments in the compact Sultanahmet district, and many galleries, museums, shops, and cafés in and around Beyoğlu, on Istanbul's European side. It's worth exploring the neighborhoods of Üsküdar and Kadıköy on the Asian side of the city, where you can see the thrum of modern life. What's most important, though, is to get out on the river—the Bosphorus divides two continents and provides top views of Istanbul's minarets, palaces, and modern high-rises.
