With ancient traditions and a rich history, Mayan society is a fascinating, integral part of Mexican culture and history. While immersed in the Museo Maya de Cancun you'll forget all about the resorts outside and instead be transported back onto the Mayan trade route. The sleekly modern museum is situated conveniently near most hotels and is definitely worth a visit.
Rescued from senescence by a beautiful renovation in 2012, the Museo Maya de Cancun is a great way for vacationers to get a sense for the richness of Maya culture and history if they lack the time for an extended tour of the Yucatan's archaeological treasures. The museum is divided into two galleries, one of which outlines some major themes in Maya culture while the other showcases some of the extraordinary artifacts that have been excavated in Cancun's enveloping province of Quintana Roo.
As a major bonus, the museum is built--on stilts--directly over one of Cancun Island's better-studied Maya sites, which makes for a lovely stroll once you've had enough of the air conditioning.
