Chicken Rice Paradise
Considered Singapore’s national dish, Hainanese Chicken Rice is a beloved if not humble staple for many. It’s served with a fragrant bowl of chicken broth, a portion of fluffy rice and tender poached chicken with the skin on. A trio of dipping sauces comprises ginger paste, dark soy sauce and chilli sauce, and sometimes kai lan or some other sautéed greens are part of the meal as well. Enjoy the traditional dish in homey surroundings at Wee Nam Kee, a casual and inexpensive restaurant that started out many years ago as a humble food stall. They offer three versions of the chicken: the traditional poached style and also drenched in soy sauce or fried. Though chicken rice is the main star, other local favorites include cereal prawns, fishhead curry, salted egg pork ribs and sambal kangkong (greens). From its basic beginnings, there are now four Wee Nam Kee outlets in Singapore and also restaurants in Philippines, Japan and Indonesia.
