To say that winter in Michigan is long is an understatement. 6 months of snow and cold could drive the most die-hard winter fan a little over the edge. So, it’s nice to find those things that keep winter truly awe-inspiring. When it’s cold enough, Lake Michigan will freeze solid, and it’s safe to walk on. Situated right between the North and South Beaches, the South Haven Light House provides a perfect landmark to walk over the waves and stand next to the base - something not possible at any other time of the year. Winter enthusiasts can find other outdoor activities to keep them busy too: the Kal-Haven trail, a 34 mile scenic trek from Kalamazoo to South Haven is great for cross-country skiing (or biking in warmer weather), and there are several ski resorts only a short drive away. Personally, after a walk on the frozen lake, I like to warm-up at one of the year-round restaurants, but to each his own!
