The landscape surrounding Phinda Private Game Reserve is totally different from what you’ll experience in Kruger, Madikwe, or the Kalahari. Here, moisture from the Indian Ocean breathes life into gently rolling hills; flat, grassy wetlands attract hippos, antelope, and far too many bird species to list; and dense forests house the Big Five and even cheetahs. The 25 rooms at &Beyond’s Phinda Rock Lodge sit atop a granite outcropping, overlooking these lush surroundings. No matter which one you’re in, you’ll feel as if you’re hovering high above the treetops and the valley below.

A stay at Phinda Rock Lodge is all-inclusive, complete with twice-daily safari drives, a Zulu village tour, bush walks, and other conservation experiences. Since the lodge is so close to the Indian Ocean, guests also have the unique opportunity to explore South Africa’s marine life. In the summer, you can join a nighttime excursion to watch leatherback and loggerhead turtles lay their eggs on the beach, or go snorkeling or scuba diving to explore the coral reefs near Sodwana Bay. While Phinda is approximately a two-hour drive from Richards Bay Airport, Airlink flies direct from Nelspruit to the lodge’s private airstrip, making it easy to connect a safari in the Greater Kruger National Park with a visit to Phinda.

Help Rhinos with andBeyond in South Africa

Through the Rhinos without Borders campaign, the safari company andBeyond is moving more than 100 rhinos from the Phinda Private Game Reserve to Botswana to help counter the effects of poaching.

Private Plunge Pools at Rock Lodge

Phinda is a 55,000 acre private game reserve run by &Beyond, the leading safari/wilderness outfitter in Africa. Phinda features several lodges, each of them exquisite and luxurious in their own right. I spent two nights at Rock Lodge, a cluster of just six private villas tucked in to the mountainside overlooking miles of wild bush. The best part? Soaking it up, literally, from the comfort of your very own personal plunge pool.

Luxury lodging in an African forest

If you want to treat yourself to a luxurious safari experience in South Africa, Phinda is the place to go. The private reserve has several lodges on the grounds, and I stayed at both Rock Lodge and Forest Lodge. The latter is more contemporary than the former (although both are equally fantastic), with floor-to-ceiling glass bungalows scattered amidst the sand-floor forest. Lie in bed, or soak in the deep tub and watch birds, nyala and other small creatures wander past the windows.

Cheetah Sightings at Phinda

Not only does &Beyond’s Phinda Private Game Reserve boast the Big 5 (lion, elephant, buffalo, leopard, rhino), it also is home to the elusive and beautiful cheetah. Over the course of four days, we were lucky enough to come across two brothers (on the hunt for a dinner of impala and wildebeest), as well as a mama cheetah and her three cubs.
