Akureyri Church

28 Eyrarlandsvegur

Designed by state architect Guðjón Samúelsson and consecrated in 1940, this Lutheran church enjoys a privileged position on a hill in the center of Akureyri. Famed for its striking stained-glass windows—one of which once belonged to Coventry Cathedral in England—it also contains an unusually large 3,200-pipe organ, an altarpiece that dates from 1806 (painted by Jón Hallgrímsson), a chandelier from the 17th century and bas-reliefs by renowned sculptor Ásmundur Sveinsson.
