  • Burgers are a classic American dish now found all over the world, but they get special treatment in Atlanta. Some are smothered in pimento cheese, others served with a liquid nitrogen milkshake. Although Atlanta’s best burgers can be hard to find, on special menus or after hours, they have the same taste you crave. Order them cooked to order how you like with your preferred toppings, or enjoy one of the classic “Atlanta” Burgers.

This five-day itinerary highlights some of Wyoming’s best family-friendly activities—from paddleboarding on Fremont Lake to fly fishing, sandboarding, and unforgettable wildlife sightings.
  • 15 Fort St, Québec City, Quebec G1R 3Z8, Canada
Old Québec can be a little hard on the wallets of budget travelers. It’s not that the restaurants are overpriced, but they definitely cater to the tourists who fill its streets most days, especially in the warmer months, and who are happy to pay a little extra for the location and the opportunity to enjoy a long meal savoring some Québecois dishes. Le Chic Shack is a good option, however, if you are looking for a quick meal that’s a good value. The restaurant’s gourmet burgers include beef, bison, chicken, and veggie ones, all served on brioche rolls. There are also three different choices of poutine—classic cheese, braised beef, and wild mushroom. Try the restaurant’s rendition of a milkshake, or lait frappé, spiked with Baileys, Kahlua, or whiskey if you are in the mood for something stronger.

Forget any notions you have about boring vanilla, chocolate, and strawberry milkshakes. At Holsteins in The Cosmopolitan, milkshakes are given an innovative twist, and many of them have a spirited, high-proof kick. At its roots, this is a diner-style eatery, so the menu consists of burgers and finger-friendly sandwiches, but none of these meals is made complete without a funky cool treat. Among the favorites on the menu are Drunken Monkey, Frozen Grasshopper, Black Cow Float and Cereal Bowl. If a shake doesn’t sound appealing, an incredibly extensive beer, wine and cocktail list is available.
  • 433 East Durant Avenue
Located across the street from Ruby Park Bus Station, CP Burger is the ultimate family destination. They serve burgers, hot dogs, milkshakes and soft serve ice cream. For those that are gluten free they have my favorite, the ahi burger wrapped in lettuce instead of a bun. I am sure the gluten-free option of a lettuce wrap is available for any of their burgers or hot dogs. Place your order and when it is ready they will call the name of the famous person, like Marilyn Monroe, that appears on your receipt. Like a 50’s diner, the food is served on a red cafeteria tray but believe me it doesn’t taste like cafeteria food. It is delicious! Burgers with a special sauce and spiked milkshakes for adults. While munching on your food occupy the kids with a game of mini-golf in the summer or ice skating in the winter, operated by CP Burger.

Locals may get a twinge of nostalgia remembering Lunchbox Laboratory’s original, tiny shack in Ballard, where vintage lunchboxes covered the walls, and they closed when they ran out of meat. Fortunately, their new South Lake Union location is much more spacious, if a little more slick and polished. You can still get enormous, super-customized burgers (pictured here is the Truffle Love), tater tots with a variety of seasoning blends, and amazingly delicious milkshakes. Try the “dork” (duck + pork) patty. Happy hour features discounted drinks, burgers, fries, and milkshakes. Prices are a little higher than your typical burger joint (about $10-15 per burger), but it’s an unforgettable experience—and you probably won’t want to eat again that day.
  • I’ve discovered an affinity for ostrich meat - it’s lean and so tasty! Perfect for burgers. At Dukes Burgers in Greenside. This burger had fried rosemary-infused butternut squash and cucumbers as well.
  • Newbury Road
Nelson’s Diner was a great place to stumble upon while heading from Belgium to Wales recently. The decor is very American and the milkshakes are just like back home! The location is a bit off the beaten bath if you’re just doing the usual tourist sites in England, but if you find yourself around the Newbury area, stop in and enjoy some great food.

There are a lot of great places to eat in the North Shore town of Haleiwa but Kono’s is by far my favorite. Their menu ranges from banana macadamia nut waffles to breakfast sliders (the biscuits are delicious!) to wraps to Kalua Pig in a variety of preparations. And milkshakes, delicious milkshakes. Kono’s is known for its breakfast bombers - tortillas filled with egg, potatoes, cheese and your choice of filling. My favorite was the Haleiwa filled with Hawaiian pulled pork. They definitely fill you up and are perfect after a day of surfing on the North Shore. It’s located at the front of the North Shore Marketplace next to the Quiksilver North Shore Boardriders Club surf shop. It’s open only for breakfast and lunch. You can also eat for free on your birthday.
  • 543 Cherry St, Macon, GA 31201, USA
The Rookery has been serving up Southern favorites since 1976, and Macon locals are loyal to the place. The sandwiches are infamous, many named for beloved bands like the Gram Parsons Cosmic Club and Blind Willie’s Buffalo Chicken. But both the fried-green tomato BLT and grilled pimento cheese are worth a try. The old-fashioned hand-spun milkshakes are equally decadent. In honor of a former president, order the Jimmy Carter Shake, which mixes banana ice cream and peanut butter with a strip of bacon to top it all off. If it’s a nice day, sit outside on the patio for the best people watching in downtown Macon.

Nostalgic for the kind of burger drive-in joint your pops went to? Look no further than Don’s. This retro slice of pure Americana is modeled after the original Don’s Drive-In in Livingston, New Jersey, which closed in 1993. The menu is a reassuringly simple combination of burgers, hot dogs, fries, cheesesteaks, onion rings and, of course, milkshakes. With an outdoor seating area for those hot summer nights.

We drove most of the way across Montana to get a taste for the bison burger at Helen’s Corral Drive-In, and we were not disappointed. The burger paired perfectly with a frosty milkshake, and we were excited to hear that 2014 may bring with it the return of the Drive-In’s famous elk burger - so there’s always that to look forward to.

Step back in time and treat yourself to a thick frosty milkshake at the Parrot Confectionery. Little has changed since its opening in 1922; from the shiny soda fountains to the old-time juke box against the wall, much of the the interior has remained unaltered for nearly a century. The Parrot rewards their customers with delectable treats such as sundaes, malts, homemade sodas, milk shakes, as well as hand dipped chocolates, homemade fudges and caramels.
  • Calle de Durango 204, Roma Norte, Hipódromo, 06700 Ciudad de México, CDMX, Mexico
If you’re missing American diner grub, head out to Barracuda Diner for a late-night burger and fries. This Condesa restaurant is open until 3 a.m. and serves heaping portions to hungry patrons waiting patiently in 1950s-style booths and Formica tables. If you want your burger “Mexicanized,” ask for one of the spicier options, like a heap of jalapeños. You can order a malted milkshake to wash it down and play a tune on the jukebox to complete the U.S.-meets-Mexico diner experience.
