Shrimp boats are an important part of the culture of coastal regions and this is no different in the Golden Isles of Georgia. As an avid seafood lover, I was excited to board the Lady Jane shrimping boat based out of Brunswick. Our guide, Phil, is a former marine biologist for the state Department of Natural Resources, so if you won’t find a fish in the sea that he can’t name. As the trawls come in, the pelicans and seagulls follow closely. Phil pulls the rope and a bounty of creatures come out, ranging from horseshoe crabs, blue crabs, stingrays, shrimp, all manners of fish and even a baby turtle. Shrimping on the Lady Jane gives guests a chance to truly see where their food comes from and to even taste what fresh shrimp tastes like.
