How Do I Love Thee?
Elizabeth Barrett Browning and Robert Browning were the “Brangelina” of their day. This famous couple whose love defied illness and parental objection was forever immortalized in the lines penned by Elizabeth Barrett Browning—"How do I love thee, let me count the ways"—in her Sonnets from the Portuguese (1845-1846). The Brownings, their lives, and their immortal love story are the subjects of this free, open-to-the-public museum, archive, and library on the campus of Baylor University in Waco. Visitors can wander through the beautiful rooms of the Center—opened in 1951—and explore the extensive collection of Dr. A.J. Armstrong, a former chairman of the Baylor English Department. Encounter rare nineteenth-century books, manuscripts, letters, and even jewelry, fans, clothes and other treasured belongings of the famous literary couple. A gift gallery on the first floor is a treasure trove of books and Victoriana.
