Grand Hyatt Hotel Beijing

1 E Chang'an Ave, Wang Fu Jing, Dongcheng Qu, China

Dining at Made in China at the Grand Hyatt is expensive, but the staff creates an excellent experience. Open kitchens allow you to catch a glimpse of the Peking ducks roasting in ovens over fruitwood-fueled fires. I always order the dumplings. —Fuchsia Dunlop This appeared in the May 2013 issue.

Underground Oasis in Beijing

From the lobby, the Grand Hyatt Beijing is another grand hotel with soaring ceilings and windows, polished marble floors, and an attentive staff. Two levels below the lobby, however, is one of the most unique and spectacular wonders ever seen in a hotel: an enormous grotto! The grotto is supported by massive columns and features an amazing 50 meter long tiled pool. Tucked along the walls behind faux-leafy vegetation are faux-natural rock jacuzzis. The ceiling changes the mood from painted puffy pink clouds to fiber optic star light. Pipe in the sounds of tropical birds, and you’ve got a little piece of paradise. Order room service and drinks by the pool and now you’ve got the trifecta!
