Östermalms Saluhall is one of Stockholm‘s most famous markets. While the prices aren’t cheap, since 1888 the market has been where those looking for the very best fish, meat, and produce shop. For most travelers in Stockholm, it provides a good lunch option if you want a fish sandwich or snack in an atmospheric Victorian food hall. The Saluhall will be closing for renovation and moving to a temporary building across the street in January 2016, and is scheduled to return to its home in 2020 after it has been refurbished and upgraded, ready to serve discerning Stockholm residents for another 125 years.

Swedish Delights
Ostermalms Saluhall is a seafood lover’s dream. Yes, you can also buy meat, produce, pastries and other items, but the abundance of seafood is what makes this place special, in my opinion. With restaurants tucked away inside the Saluhall, it’s a great place to either pick up something to go or sit and linger over a nice meal and a glass of wine. I stopped by here for lunch at the well known Lisa Elmqvist, where I had a beautifully presented and delicious toast skagen. Who knew shrimp mixed with mayonnaise and dill and topped with bleak roe would be such a great combination? http://www.theglobegetter.com/home/blog/2015/4/29/stockholm-in-30-hours

For antique furniture and interior décor as well as designer brand names like Prada, Swarovski, Gucci, and Louis Vuitton, head over to the city’s high-end district, Östermalm, and stroll along Biblioteksgatan and Birger Jarlsgatan to drop a couple thousand kronor. Two blocks from Birger Jarlsgatan, you’ll find Modernity, which sells high-priced jewelry, textiles, ceramics, glassware, and art.
