El Portal Sedona Hotel

Why we love it: Sedona’s only Arts & Crafts adobe hotel is an architectural masterpiece

Highlights:
- windows framed in 200-year-old wood
- real-deal 18-inch adobe walls, sculpted by hand
- pet-friendly — so much so it doesn’t charge extra fees! Consult the hotel about the best-sized room for your animal companion

The review: Within a block of Sedona’s art district, this luxury inn stands behind a veil of trees, rockwork, and grapevine trellises. El Portal’s pink adobe compliments the greenery and scarlet terrain so elegantly it has appeared on the cover of American Home and the book Southwest Style. Arches and reclaimed beams of juniper or burl wood soar overhead in this replica of a 1910 Arts and Crafts-style hacienda, complete with period doorknobs, light fixtures, and heater grills.

Each of the 12 suites has a custom-made door and a distinctive vintage look, ranging from Early California to the Cowboy High Style made famous by western furniture designer Thomas Molesworth (1890-1977). Rooms include grace notes like corner fireplaces, stencil designs, French doors, and stained glass ceiling panels. Mobility-impaired guests should opt for the ADA-accessible Adobe Suite, which has a stone-paved private pet patio, handmade Saltillo tile floors, and leather chairs flanking a turquoise-tiled fireplace.

Guests can gather around the courtyard’s campfire or by the living’s rooms large hearth. El Portal also has a private garden, fish pond, two swimming pools, and a full gym, plus entry privileges next door at Sedona Spa. The inn only serves breakfast: expect the standards like pancakes interspersed with breakfast burritos and huevos rancheros. But visitors can snack on fruit, cheese, and chips-and-salsa during happy hour. Pour yourself wine on the honor system!
