No visit to Rio is complete without trying feijoada, a stew of black beans, meat, and garlic accompanied by rice, kale, and orange slices. Heavily influenced by Brazil’s African and Portuguese roots, feijoada is a Saturday lunch staple. Piping hot pão de queijo (cheese bread) and bolinhos de bacalhau (fried codfish balls) are snacking standbys. Wash everything down with a glass or three of chope, Rio’s ubiquitous draft beer. A more potent potable is the caipirinha, a cocktail made from muddled lime, sugar, and a cane liquor called cachaça. If you drink one too many, a cold plate of açaí from any of the city’s juice stands is a popular—and effective—hangover cure.

Cariocas, as residents of Rio are called, know that a good life is one spent outdoors. They eat their breakfast at sidewalk tables, drink their beer in open-air bars, and hold impromptu dance parties on moonlit cobbled streets. Spending time on Rio’s beaches is the best way to appreciate the spirit of acceptance and expression that birthed the hip-shaking moves of samba and the skin-baring costumes of Carnival. The body is celebrated here, and the come-as-you-are vibe of the beaches spills onto the city’s sidewalks, where you’re just as likely to encounter board shorts as you are business suits.

There’s more to Rio than epic views. To experience the city like a local, hit the streets. Grab a suco (fruit juice) from your choice of juice bars then pop into a restaurant to cheer during a football game and down a few glasses of chope, Rio’s light draft beer. Take a walking tour of the city’s favelas, or shanty towns, with a Rio-based group like Favela Adventures. For dinner, follow the locals to Bar Do Mineiro in the bohemian Santa Teresa neighborhood. Don’t worry about trying to translate the menu; just close your eyes and point. After dinner, grab a street-side table at the Bar Veloso boteco in Leblon for more chope and people-watching.

Practical Information

The high season in Rio runs from December through March. May through September brings thinner crowds and lower prices. Most visitors arrive at the Galeão-Antônio Carlos Jobim International Airport, which has several transfer options into the city. People of many nationalities must obtain a visa before entering Brazil. Rio is huge and thus best explored via metro, bus, and taxi. Brazilian Portuguese is spoken here, and locals appreciate a few greetings and pleasantries spoken in the native language. English menus are available at the more popular restaurants, and tips are usually included in the bill. The Brazilian real is the only currency accepted, though many businesses take credit cards.

The sight of the little yellow streetcar rumbling across the top of the Lapa aqueduct’s arches, making its way uphill to the neighborhood known as Santa Teresa, is a city classic. An accident had it shut down for five years, and the new bondinho may lack some of its former authenticity (for one thing, there used to be more locals aboard); yet the tropicalized Lisbon flavor of the neighborhood’s streets is still in place. Visitors can access points of interest such as the Parque das Ruínas aboard the trolley, then wander the district’s streets on foot till they reach the famed Selarón stairs that go back down to Lapa.
Among all the odd-shaped mountains that adorn the Rio horizon, Sugarloaf (Pão de Açúcar in Portuguese) stands apart for its majesty and fortuitous placement. Sugarloaf is part of a single landmark along with sister peak Urca, to which it connects via a now-century-old cable car locals call the bondinho. When you reach the top of the rounded outcropping, 1,300 feet up, it’s hard to decide what to look at: You’ve got 360 degrees of Rio from on high. The recommended (and most sought-after) visiting hour is sunset. Yet there’s no hurry to descend before night falls. Seeing the lights come up in the cidade maravilhosa is well worth a tarry.
Chef Pedro de Artagão went from fresh-faced promoter to celebrity chef at Irajá, where instead of trying to take things more haute, he gathered traditional—maybe even disdained—Brazilian ingredients and transformed them into something spectacular. The restaurant’s mansion setting requires guests to squeeze past the kitchen to the dining room, on a high-ceilinged loggia, framed by a vertical garden. Locals marvel at what Artagão does with once-lowly cassava, now stylishly presented as high-toned aipim (whole fried), farofa (fried meal), mash, or tapioca. Regulars and out-of-towners alike enjoy sampling ingredients from the Amazon, such as tucupi (manioc juice), jambu (a Brazilian guava), and tacacá (a spicy seafood, pepper, and jambu stew).
The Real Gabinete is a public library—but not the kind you find every day. This neo-Gothic pile, erected by Rio’s dynamic 19th-century Portuguese community, holds 350,000 valuable volumes, impressively shelved in immense floor-to-ceiling bookcases. The rich, evocative interior calls up faraway times and places; the reading room’s iron chandelier and multicolored clerestory enchant visitors who are welcome to sit down and read as well. Only when you’re back on Rio’s bustling downtown streets will you realize just what an oasis the Gabinete is.
It’s easier than ever to get away without clocking out, now that more hotels are opening their own dedicated coworking spaces. Here are the places leading the pack.
If you’re planning on being downtown, or in Lapa, give yourself an hour or two before or after for a recharge at this winning, circa-1923 restaurant. The Nova Capela is right in the middle of the city’s nightlife district, but at that, this Portuguese-influenced locale is the last to lock its doors, just before daybreak. Liveried waiters toil day and night, serving up the joint’s classic dishes: goat in broccoli-rice, braised octopus, plus the most-requested appetizer—the codfish bolinho de bacalhau croquettes, especially yummy here. From there, it’s time for a cold beer or a Portuguese vintage.
Ipanema—streets as well as beaches—might well be Rio’s most influential runway, a showcase for the signature looks both casual and elegant that turn up later in neighborhood boutiques. Some shops that started out small are big deals now and still maintain that Carioca touch, including Farm and its styles for young women; Osklen and Redley, for beachier looks; Melissa’s plastic sandals and other footwear; and, of course, Havaianas, Rio’s most recognizable brand. In Ipanema it’s all still there; Garcia D’Ávila Street is ground zero.
Comuna was born as an alternative cultural space and has now become a landmark in newly hot “BotaSoho,” what they call the hipster scene in Botafogo, an old-style but rapidly gentrifying neighborhood. Open till sunup, this stone mansion has gained renown for its homemade burgers—go for the ones that feature wasabi mayonnaise—and for the casual vibe, common enough in Rio, but which here more resembles that of a São Paulo bar. The pleasant patio is great for stand-up drinking and movie-watching, while the upper level is given over to food events, theater performances, parties, and more.
If you had to choose one place to symbolize Rio’s Belle Époque, it would be this sumptuous café, a must-do for every downtown visitor. Built by a Portuguese family in 1894—when Rio still evinced the splendor of a former imperial capital—its art nouveau–inspired refinements like huge mirrors, imported from Europe, wood furnishings, immense chandeliers, and stained-glass transoms welcome patrons. Colombo is all so terribly majestic you could be at one of the Continent’s grand salons or even the Tortoni in Buenos Aires. Perfect for afternoons over a pastelzinho de Belém, Lisbon’s traditional sweet egg tart.
A Carioca version of the São Paulo classic, the Rio Astor has two straightaway advantages: It sits on a magical city corner, at the start of Ipanema, just across from the beach, and it has a wide, airy terrace. From there, visitors delight in its drink menu (one of the city’s most complete) as waiters scurry hither and yon at cocktail hour, serving draft beers, which are called chopps and which somehow taste creamier here. The Astor also features a wide-ranging menu that updates Brazilian classics with unusual ingredients and more ambitious presentations of standards like arroz com feijão. The entire mix translates to one of Rio’s winningest combo of bar-rail and white tablecloth venue.
