The Jamaica Pegasus Hotel

81 Knutsford Blvd, Kingston 5, Jamaica

Outside of Carnival time, you’ll find very little in the Caribbean that’s actually open 24/7. Major hotels and resorts are the exception, of course, though even they don’t usually offer much of anything to eat that doesn’t come by way of room service.

Not so at the Jamaica Pegasus. One of Kingston’s leading business hotels, the Pegasus is where I found the 24 Seven Cafe.

It was ungodly late... Saturday night... the jerk chicken I’d devoured earlier in the evening a distant memory.

24 Seven Cafe to the rescue! Sandwiches, muffins, sweets, and what must be some of Kingston’s finest ice cream are all on offer here anytime, day or night.

Drink selections range from coffee, tea, sodas headlined by the local fave Ting to Red Stripe and a few other beers for those who want to keep the party going. 24 Seven Cafe is located in the lobby of the Jamaica Pegasus hotel. Night owls won’t want to miss it.

The president slept here

Jamaican friends have long sang the praises of the Jamaica Pegasus Hotel to me. They’d tell me of the hotel’s fancy pool, tres-chic for a gritty city like Kingston. They’d talk about the old days seeing movies here, marveling at the elegance and grace of the staff, and savoring the best ice cream this side of Devon House in the hotel lobby. Everything about the place always sounded so regal; so fit for the elite. When I finally visited for myself just a few years ago, I found out how right my old Jamaican friends really were by visiting the Liguanea Suite. Located on the 16th floor, the elegant two-room suite looks out over this view of Kingston.

It looks pretty ordinary, but as the hotel sales associate leading on a tour of the property pointed out, this particular view is rather exclusive. The reason: the Liguanea Suite is often reserved for heads of state visiting Kingston on official business. Upon their official visit in April 2015, U.S. President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama stayed in the Liguanea Suite, enjoying this view and all that the other legendary amenities that the Jamaica Pegasus Hotel has to offer. No word on whether or not they tried the ice cream, though.
