Beyond the natural surroundings and scenery, one of the great joys of crossing the strait is seeing the numerous lighthouses—some 41 in all—that break up the oceanic and mountainous terrain between Punta Dungeness and Cabo del Espíritu Santo. Many are centuries old and have been declared national monuments, including the converted County of Peebles hulk, the world’s first four-masted, iron-hulled ship, the restored San Isidro lighthouse (now a museum and lodge) and the Evangelistas lighthouse, located at the western mouth of the strait.
