I’m not sure why or how they started, but Taipei has an oddly high number of unusual cafes and restaurants in and around town that are each a lot of fun to visit. One of the most popular of these quirky cafes is the Hello Kitty cafe located on Daan Street. The Hello Kitty dining craze in Taipei has been going on for decades, but at the Sweets cafe be prepared for cute overload. The explosion of color and servers dressed in pink French maid’s outfits set the tone for a fun but unusual dining experience. There are a wide variety of food options, but many come just for a quick dessert and to marvel at the unusual decor. If you have kids who are into Hello Kitty this is also a great place to buy gifts–the cafes offer merchandise not found anywhere else. No matter your level of interest, it’s hard not to get caught up in the Hello Kitty thrall that has Taiwan firmly in its grasp.
