Malin + Goetz Share Their Favorite Suitcase, The Ultimate Find, and the Best Way to Navigate a New City

Their best travel tips.

Matthew Malin and Andrew Goetz of Malin + Goetz—a line you probably know from your favorite fashion store, Delta’s first-class cabin, and design hotels across the globe—share five objects from their travels.

1. The Perfect Suitcase

Andrew: I travel with as little as possible. What I do bring though I pack in a Rinowa carry-on. They’re so sturdy, efficient, and good looking.

2. A Sweet Ride

Matthew: We love riding our bikes when we’re in the country. Our favorites are Trek’s Gary Fisher bikes, which our little pug, Mr. Greenberg, rides in too from the seat of the basket.

3. The Get-To-Know-a-New-City Accessories

Andrew: Runs are such a good way to get to know a city. I like the Asics’ Kyono Gel shoes because they have high arch and great support. I also really like Moves, an app that tracks where and how long you’ve ran, because it helps motivate me to push harder. Turns out I pretty much go the same speed every time, but I try to go a little faster.

4. An Analog Essential

Matthew: I still love maps—and not the kind you find on a phone. Like proper printed maps. I usually study them before going to a city to get to know the layout. I like that all the streets look equal on paper so you can imagine a bit, before you get there, what they might look like in real life.

5. Best Find Yet

Matthew: One trip in Amsterdam, we were walking around the antique part of town and came across this 19th century French bulldog toy that was actually a sculpture. It was totally freaky in a good way. We wanted it but we were leaving the next day and thought it would be too much trouble to haul back to New York. When we got back to our hotel, we ended up watching an antique show on TV: there was the toy, on the show, getting a glowing review. We rushed as quickly as we could to buy it before our flight.
