At Point Udall, on the east coast of St. Croix, a sundial called Millennium Monument was erected for the New Year’s celebration in 2000. The stark sculpture represents the azimuth of the first sunrise of that year, the new millennium, at this easternmost point of the United States. Point Udall also affords visitors panoramic views and marks the starting point of a hike that leads to the beach at Isaac Bay.

Get Ahead of the Entire United States at Point Udall

This is it. The end of the line. You’re looking at the easternmost point in the United States. Once a hard to get to spot reserved for local teens and their penchant for secluded makeout sessions, the area was cleared and the monument you see above was erected ahead of millennium celebrations. Leading the way into every new year since then, Point Udall may not host parties like it’s 1999, but it’s still definitely work a visit — particularly for spectacular sunrises.

Hike the Isaac and Jack Bay Preserve

Located on the south side of the extreme eastern edge of St. Croix, Jack and Isaac are two of the most pristine and beautiful stretches of sand on the island; certainly among the most virgin of beaches in all of the Virgin Islands. The beaches form part of the 300-acre Jack and Isaac Bay Preserve, which in recent years has become more accessible thanks to a series of well-kept hiking trails. The Jack and Isaac Bay Preserve offers fun and fairly low-impact hiking suitable for kids and adults alike. If you can walk, you can handle it. Just be sure to bring enough drinking water and maybe a light snack, as there are no facilities of any kind out here. To get to the head of the trail, just head to Point Udall, the easternmost point of the island and the entire United States.
