This place gets packed at peak hours, yet the waiters stay attentive and friendly. If you want to experience Texas’s “classy comfort food movement,” Max’s is a great place to do it.

BBQ is serious business in Houston, as in the rest of Texas, and any local will have a strong opinion about where you can find the holy grail. Gatlin’s, however, is a favorite among many. Botanika is one of San Sebastián‘s best local spots to just BE. Especially if you consider yourself slightly hip, ride a fixed gear, are a NOLA-phile, or enjoy café food with a vegetarian bent. The private garden overlooks the river that runs through the city. It’s off the beaten path but a wonderful spot to meet interesting locals and enjoy a beer or coffee.

Named after wilderness activist John Muir, this trendy cocktail bar in Kreuzberg serves classic libations with a twist. The menu regularly changes, and the interior of the basement bar (lit by candles) is cozy and comfortable—great for cool evenings.

Unlike some of Barcelona‘s other Vintage stores (ahem, Holala), Love Vintage focuses on wearable antiques, and clothes that don’t resemble costumes. This is a great shop for vintage newcomers who are looking for something different to wear at a reasonable price. Just don’t buy Levis. For whatever reason, they’re pricey, even second-hand all over Europe.

Rent a car or hop an ALSA bus from Barcelona‘s Estació Nord to Berga for a 45 minute hike up Queralt Mountain from Berga’s Plaça de Sant Pere. Besides getting a healthy dose of fresh air and some light exercise, you’ll take in some of the best views Catalonia has to offer: clusters of terra-cotta roofs in the valleys, green mountains towering above it all.

Fusta’m is a small and inviting space to search out unique housewares and furniture. Unlike other shops in Barcelona selling similar wares, there’s plenty of space to move around, and everything is carefully restored and repaired by staff.


That said, even for Barcelona’s generally expensive vintage scene, this store can be pricey, so bring lots of willpower, and in its absence, wads of cash.

Yes, it’s a canteen, so self-service, but it’s delicious and affordable. The secret appeal about this place, though, is not the price, nor the décor (which doesn’t exist), it’s the wonderful view of the city. Arrive before 1 p.m. to snag a seat before the local workers arrive for their midday meals.
