You’ll have to bring binoculars and keep your eyes peeled for their spouting; if the weather’s clear, you can sometimes see them feeding just a few hundred yards from shore. Rangers will often lead whale-watching programs during peak months, so check for information and schedules.

Good wine flows through Santiago, the Chilean capital, like water. Santiago’s bars also serve up stellar craft beer, fresh juices, and well-mixed cocktails. Find a seat, a bar stool, or a rooftop lounge to sip in style as the setting sun reflects off the Andes Mountains.

Don’t settle for kitsch: Take home a souvenir of Oahu that offers a locally made memory of the island. Shop at the markets and malls where residents find treats from mochi doughnuts to a beer salted with sea water. Then explore distinctive Hawaiian gifts like koa-wood ukuleles, Niihau shell lei, updated aloha shirts and quilts with traditional botanical designs.

If you only have one week in Greece, stick to Athens and the islands of the Cyclades, and you’ll get a well-rounded glimpse into everything that Greece has to offer. Spend two days in Athens, two in Santorini, two in Naxos, and one night enjoying dinner and drinks at the water’s edge in Mykonos. You can do a lot with one week in Greece.
