“Old Ironsides” is the oldest commissioned warship in the world, a restored frigate that is still crewed by Navy officers and sailors and is capable of sailing under its own power more than 220 years after it was built. Most times, however, the USS Constitution is docked at the Charlestown Naval Yard and open for public tours. Undefeated in 33 naval battles, the Constitution is currently the only active U.S. Navy vessel to have sunk another ship in combat, including HMS Guerrière in 1812—a battle in which British cannonballs bounced off the Constitution‘s 25-inch-thick oak sides, earning the ship its famous nickname. Follow the Freedom Trail across the Tobin Bridge to tour the ship and the nearby USS Constitution Museum.
