Hop on the Jamestown Newport Ferry to visit this little working lighthouse a mile out in Narragansett Bay. Restored by a nonprofit group, the 1912 lighthouse and its island can be visited either for an hour or overnight. The nonprofit maintains the light by enlisting volunteers to stay in the house overnight or for a week at a time, performing the simple duties required of an automatic light. Day-trippers get to enjoy the little museum and windswept island without doing any chores.
