Iguanas may be emblematic of the famous Galápagos, but here in Guayaquil these scaly reptiles have found a home of their own. The Seminario or Parque de las Iguanas (iguana park) crawls with hundreds of these 2-foot-long beasts, slinking along the pavement and patches of grass. Beware though, they often sit in trees releasing showers of highly unpleasant gifts. The square lies opposite the Catedral Metropolitana. This neo-Gothic building is a recreation of the old cathedral which stood on Santa Ana Hill and was destroyed by a fire in 1692. Elsewhere, in the Guayas River sits Isla Santay. Here, a small community of families live amid roaming crocodiles.
