Pīpīwai Trail
One of Maui's best hikes, this path climbs 650 feet through the lush Kīpahulu area of Haleakalā National Park. A half mile from the visitor's center an overlook provides sweeping views of the gorge and the 200-foot "horsetail" Makahiku Falls. Continue on past a sprawling banyan, stopping to marvel at the sunlight trickling through a dense, spectacular bamboo forest. At the path's end, 1.8 miles in, grow ferns and moss-shrouded trees. The greenery frames an even more dramatic cascade: the Waimoku Falls plunging 400 feet down a sheer-walled lava amphitheater. Not ready for a solo stroll? Park rangers offer a guided tour every Sunday at 10am (book a week ahead: 808-248-7375).
