Hotel Imperial
Originally built as a residence for Prince Philip of Württemberg in 1863, this grand structure was opened as the Hotel Imperial in 1873. It indeed still resembles a palace, with Greek statues, chandeliers, and high, intricately designed stucco ceilings. The rooms bring imperial Vienna back to life, particularly in the suites. Visitors here feel like royalty, and sometimes they are. Guests have included a who’s who of celebrities and dignitaries, including Queen Elizabeth II, Indira Gandhi, and Michael Jackson. It's rumored that an apprentice chef at the hotel invented the well-known Imperial Torte in honor of Emperor Franz Josef I, a must-have for any sweet tooth. For some sweet sounds, be sure to check for Bösendorfer piano concerts in the 1873 HalleNSalon.

A night at Palace Hotel Imperial
In February 2015 I had the chance to spend a night at Hotel Imperial, Austria's best hotel. The Imperial is an original 19th century town palace right next to Musikverein, home of the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra. Yes, it's glamorous. Staff are very helpful, and arrogance free. Because everything was perfect I could focus on fine details. My favourites: the mattress, the embleme shower door, and the Kaisersemmeln (hand made irregular rolls) for breakfast.

Imperial Torte
While Sacher Torte's reputation has toured the world, Imperial Torte is my absolute favourite Viennese cake. It has several thin layers of almond wafer and cocoa cream and is wrapped in a delicate coat of marzipane and milk chocolate. Have it with Melange or Turkish coffee.
