In a French jam
Menton is the capital of French lemons. Every winter the roads are closed for a lemon festival featuring larger-than-life sculptures built of citrus fruits. Porcelaine tile’s in the town’s Fontana Rossa gardens are dedicated to the fruit and restaurants feature it in lick-your-spoon-clean soufflés. It seems natural, then, that the local jam joint features artisanal lemon jam made in small batches, coaxing the fullest flavor from each fruit. The jamery has become so famous, tours of the operations now require advance reservations and they offer much more than their citrus jams; strawberries are preserved with pineapple, tomatoes are saved with eggplant and ginger. The store also offers traditional candies, fruit jellies, local honey, condiments and preserved onions.
