If you want to surprise the train lover in your life with plans for a locomotive trip for two, here’s a Valentine’s Day gift for you. Amtrak is having a Valentine’s Day Buy One Get One Free Sale on its reserved coach seats (and some of its Acela business-class seats) from now until 11:59 p.m. ET on February 16, for nationwide travel from February 22 to August 31, 2022.

This means that two people traveling together in coach on Amtrak can get two one-way tickets for as low as:

  • New York to Philadelphia $18 ($51 for Acela)
  • Chicago to Milwaukee: $25
  • Boston to New York: $29 ($69 for Acela)
  • New York to Washington, D.C.: $29 ($80 for Acela)
  • Los Angeles to Seattle: $101
  • Atlanta to Washington, D.C.: $106
  • Philadelphia to Savannah: $112

This sale applies to coach seats on some of the most scenic train routes in the United States, including the Coast Starlight, Empire Builder, and California Zephyr. The offer is valid for any of Amtrak’s reserved service (except Auto Train, Pennsylvanian, Keystone Service, and 7000-8999 Thruways). Adults must travel together and be booked on the same reservation to qualify for this deal.

Things to keep in mind before you book

This deal can’t be made any better—it’s not combinable with other discount offers and isn’t valid on Saver Fares.

While a 25 percent cancellation fee may apply, Amtrak is waiving all change fees for reservations made by April 30, 2022, in case you need to reschedule your trip.

Amtrak is no longer limiting capacity, but you can see what percentage of seats have been sold in real time. Per federal law, all employees and customers age two and older are required to wear a face mask onboard Amtrak trains and can only remove them while actively eating, drinking, or taking medication. According to Amtrak policy, “Neck gaiters, open-chin triangle bandanas, face shields, and masks containing valves, mesh material, or holes of any kind do not qualify as acceptable face coverings.”

In addition to enhanced cleaning and disinfecting protocols at stations and onboard, Amtrak confirmed that all trains are equipped with onboard filtration systems that cycle fresh air through cars every four to five minutes.

How to book

To book tickets, visit amtrak.com/vdaysale and the discount will be automatically applied to the standard fare (or use the discount code “V214” at checkout).
