Mwâ Ka

Noumea, New Caledonia

Mwâ Ka (Big House or House of Man), a monumental 12-meter (40-foot) totem pole, is divided into eight levels, each carved by an artist from one of the eight regions of New Caledonia. In 2004, it was erected in the square across from the New Caledonia Museum (Musée de Nouvelle-Calédonie) as the mast of a sculpture of a traditional double-hull canoe. The work has extraordinary power and beauty and merits a visit.
