Not to be confused (or compared) with Ninety Mile Beach in Australia, this seemingly endless strand—it goes from Ahipara to Scott Point on the western coast below Cape Reinga—is actually only 88 kilometers (55 miles) long. Another fun fact: It’s also officially a highway, but one that’s only suitable for four-wheel-drive vehicles. Surfers come here for some of the world’s best left-hand shore breaks. Others forgo the waves and bodyboard down the dunes instead.
