Need a break from shopping along Ponsonby Road? Head to Western Park, which spans 20 acres—though it looks much smaller from the road. In addition to a playground and walking trails, the park is dotted with sunken sculptures designed to represent historic Auckland buildings. The three building “ruins” by John Radford are made of reinforced concrete and have interesting interiors viewable through adjacent portals. The sculptures are popular with climbing children and anyone seeking an unusual photo backdrop.
