The Little Cheese Shop

Main St, Grove, Dingle, Co. Kerry, Ireland

Visiting this cheese shop was like touring Costco during Christmas. Samples, my friends. Samples. I’ve never tried so many different cheeses in my entire life, and I’m certain I left this little shop lactose intolerant. And I would do it over in a heartbeat. Ireland‘s cheese scene really is something to behold, and this is the place to stock up your picnic basket prior to touring the Dingle Peninsula. I’m a fan of the heavy, funky stuff - the more mold the better - but I’m sure you’ll find something to suit your fancy under this roof. Don’t forget the bread.

So Much Cheese, So Little Time

The Little Cheese Shop in Dingle was a happy find. The board outside the shop advertised a ‘seaweed cheese’ that just begged to be sampled. Upon entering the shop, my eyes widened as big as cheese wheels at the selection. The array of cheeses was impressive; hard cheese, soft cheese, yellow cheese, blue cheese, cheese from goats, cheese from cows, cheese with seaweed, fresh cheeses and very mature cheeses. Basically I had just stumbled upon a treasure trove of locally made, traditional Irish cheeses and fresh breads. I did consider buying an entire 22 pound wheel of cheese but the logistics in our already full rental car would’ve been a nightmare. (Would we strap it onto the hood? Do I just hold it in my lap? Whose suitcase would we have to leave behind in order to fit my wheel of cheese?) Instead we opted for a sampling of cheeses and breads for a picnic later during our drive around the Ring of Kerry. So if you’re anywhere in the vicinity of Dingle, make sure you leave space in your car for a giant wheel of cheese from the Little Cheese Shop.
