Dresden Frauenkirche Raised from Ruins
All roads in Dresden seem to lead to this church, which was rebuilt after being completely destroyed in WWII. It is a great monument to human resilience. The pedestrian zones around the church invite you to linger in their many restaurants, which have outside seating for people watching, or shops. You can also take a horse-drawn carriage to see even more of this amazing city. There is a nice Hilton a stone’s throw away from the church. If you are lucky, you catch some opera-worthy performers singing or playing an instrument.
Going Up
A trip to Dresden is not complete without a visit to the Frauenkirche, the Church of Our Lady. The view from the top is spectacular. But many of the views going up are just as wonderful.
Stroll through the Old City in Dresden
Set on the banks of the Elbe, the Old City of Dresden is dotted with baroque and Renaissance buildings so intricate that a simple walk through the streets is enough to occupy an afternoon. Meticulously restored after World War II, the Old City is now a hub of history and culture – the Royal Palace and the Academy of Arts are found here, among others – although the environment is calm. Explore museums, or climb to the top of the dome of the Frauenkirche for sweeping sights of the city. Then, take a seat at a café in Neumarkt for an afternoon coffee. When the sun begins to set, the light will cast a golden hue on the buildings and make for a romantic stroll.
