Ten kilometers (six miles) northwest of Pylos, the Ionian Sea washes onto the silky golden sand of Romanos Beach, along a shore fringed by dunes and olive groves. If you crave action, stick to the section that’s packed with beach bars, cafés and umbrella-shaded lounge chairs; there’s also a restaurant. If you prefer tranquillity, venture farther down the beach. As you stroll, keep an eye out for the small sea turtles that come ashore here to nest. The Paleo Kastro—the Old Castle of Pylos—can be seen from here.
