Surrounded by the multicolored stucco buildings of the Old Town, the austere neoclassical Église Saint-Louis is a sober monument to the Enlightenment. Completed at the beginning of the French Revolution, it was originally a temple dedicated to Reason and “the supreme being.” A veritable treatise on neoclassical architecture, the church’s shallow pedimented entrance portico leads to a long barrel vault and an altar topped by a dramatic coffered dome. It was listed as a French Historical Monument in 1945.
