House of Sheikh Ghanim bin Abdulrahman Al Thani

Al Wakrah, Qatar

The House of Sheikh Ghanim bin Abdulrahman Al-Thani, located in an old district of traditional buildings in Al-Wakra, was built at the beginning of the 20th century and purchased by Sheikh Ghamin bin Abdulrahman Al-Thani in 1960. The house was initially used to trade merchandise and produce a traditional date-based food. Because of this, the house is traversed by a network of interconnected channels 4-inches deep through which the juice of squashed dates ran into an underground pot. One of the corners of the courtyard has a staircase to an upper terrace from where visitors can admire the seashore and mangroves. The prince bought this house for a reason: because of it unique history and architectural features, the same reasons visitors should make a trip to Wakra. The house is open 24-hours a day. UTM coordinates N 25° 10' 20.48" E 51° 36' 39.93"
